Elevation profile
The route crosses Kunzum La at 4,590 m — the pass that connects Spiti to Lahaul and closes with the first heavy snow. Chandratal, the crescent-shaped lake beyond it, sits at around 4,300 m.
Camping at the lake itself is now restricted to protect the shoreline; designated sites sit a few kilometres back.
The season is short and weather-dependent. Snow can close Kunzum at either end of the window, and a well-built itinerary has a contingency day.
Common questions
Can you camp at Chandratal lake?
Not on the shoreline — camping there is restricted to protect the lake. Designated campsites are a few kilometres away, a short walk from the water.
When does Kunzum La open?
Usually late May or June, depending on snow clearance, and it closes with the first heavy snowfall, generally by mid-October.
