The shrine sits in a cave in the Trikuta hills, reached by a paved track of roughly 12 km from Katra. Most pilgrims walk it; ponies, palanquins, battery cars and a helicopter service are all available for parts of the route.
The single non-negotiable is the yatra parchi — the registration slip issued by the Shrine Board. Without it you are not permitted onto the track, and it is checked at Banganga. It is free, and it can be obtained online or at the Katra counters.
The climb takes most people six to eight hours at a steady pace. It is paved throughout and lit at night, which is why a large share of pilgrims walk overnight to avoid both heat and crowds.

Almost everything that goes wrong here is a sequencing problem — the right things done in the wrong order. This is the order that works.
Get the yatra slip — this is mandatory
The Shrine Board's yatra parchi is free and required. Obtain it online in advance or at the Katra registration counters. It is checked at Banganga and you cannot start the climb without it.

The Bhairavnath temple sits a further 2.5 km up and is traditionally visited after darshan at the bhawan. Many pilgrims consider the yatra incomplete without it.
